1. 1506-1620
In 1506, the Portuguese took control of the area that would then become the United Arab Emirates. However, later on, the Portuguese began to suffer from the efforts of the East Indian Company and in 1620 were essentially removed from the last emirate.

2. 1744-1891
From 1744-1891, the Emirates were part of the First Saudi State and under Saudi rule. However, the Saudi states had little control of the Emirates, and eventually the British got the upper hand and took over the Emirates under official rule.

3. 1892-1971
In 1892, the British signed official agreements with the Gulf States to give Britain full control over foreign affairs; however, each emirate had control over internal affairs. In 1971, the British representative and Sheik Zayed, representing the UAE, came to an agreement and the UAE became officially independent. It is friendly with Britain, however. In 1972, it elected its first president.

4. 1962
In 1962, Abu Dhabi discovered oil and became the first of the emirates to export oil. The leader of Abu Dhabi at that time then transferred the revenue of the oil business towards education and healthcare. The UAE is now the 7th leading oil producer in the world.

Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan becomes ruler of Abu Dhabi. New administrative departments are also formed. Sheikh Zayed goes on to represent the UAE when it gains independence from the British.

In 1968, the British officially announced that they would withdraw all troops from the Gulf by 1971. Discussions take place about the forming of the Federation.

On December 2, 1971, the United Arab Emirates was officially formed. The UAE consists of seven emirates: Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm al-Qaiwain, Ras al-Khaimah and Fujairah. Even though around 80% of the country is desert, it's one of the world's fastest-growing tourist destinations. It's capital city, Abu Dhabi, lies in the emirate of the same name.

The Executive Council replaces the Abu Dhabi Cabinet. The Council is now the Emirates' official government parties and departments. Before this, however, the Cabinet approves the merging of Emirates Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Sharjah into the UAE petroleum Ministry, as these are the three main oil districts.

9. 1983
Sheikh Zayed announces that while according to Islamic principles and values a woman's role in society is to raise children, women should not be confined only to that role. This is upon the inauguration of the new headquarters of the Abu Dhabi Women's Association.

10. January 4, 2010
On January 4, 2010, the Burj Khalifa officially opened. Commissioned on September 21, 2004, at 2,722 ft. tall, the Burj Khalifa is officially the worlds tallest manmade structure. It is also the building with the most floors. Located in the UAE's most populated city of Dubai, the Burj Khalifa is used as a hotel, office building, and major tourist destination. It has seen its fair share of BASE jumpers, climbers, and suicidal people.
