In 1975, adult literacy rate was 54% among men and 31% among
women. Education has always been a pretty big priority in the UAE. Now, adult
literacy rate is around 90% for both
genders. In 2005, the ADEC (Abu Dhabi Education Council) was established with
the goal of developing education throughout the UAE. Rote learning has also
been minimized, and English-language learning has been integrated into subjects
such as math and science. There are three major universities in the UAE: UAE
University, which had 502 students in its founding year as compared to nearly
15,000 in 2006; Zayed University, formerly an all-women school that now accepts
men; and HCT, the largest college in the UAE.
Male youth literacy rate is around 94.4%, and female youth literacy rate is around 97%. Primary school participation to the last primary grade is around 84%. Education systems consist of Primary School, Preparatory School, Secondary School, and Technical Secondary School. Public education is free through university level. The UAE also has one of the lowest student-to-teacher ratios in the world, at 28:1. Education is compulsory through the 9th grade, though this rule is not strictly enforced.
